Connect Homes honored with Architecture and Social Impact awards at San Francisco Design Week
Connect Homes was founded to build good design at scale
Connect Homes is honored with three prestigious San Francisco Design Week Awards, announced on Friday by the nonprofit organization San Francisco Design Week (SFDW).
Connect Homes received SF Design Week’s Architecture Award, which recognized the prefab Mar Vista Connect 11 for its ground-breaking design and commitment to thought leadership in meeting the needs of a positive future for society. The Mar Vista Connect 11 is an 11 module, 2,900 square foot, state-of the-art prefab courtyard home that was assembly-line built far more quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively than it could have been built on site. This urban Mar Vista site originally had an outdated, energy inefficient 1,200 square foot house on it, which was quickly replaced with the Connect Home in a terrific example of what their prefab system can do.
The fact that a prefab home can win such a prestigious architecture award is testament to how Connect Homes is making award-winning houses more accessible.
At SFDW, Connect Homes also took home Honorable Mention in Architecture for a small prefab home in Santa Ynez.
Even more notably, Connect Homes won the Social Impact award for a new line of prefab supportive interim housing created for those currently experiencing homelessness.
Connect Homes was recognized for the Connect Shelters System — a rapid-deploy prefab housing solution that can flexibly serve different housing needs, whether emergency, interim, or permanent. Connect Shelters can be 100% completed on Connect Homes’ assembly line, at a rate of 4–8 sleeping rooms a day, and delivered to the site ready to be immediately used. The product line has one and two story solutions — units for singles and families — with options for en-suite bathrooms and kitchens.
Connect Shelters’ first Supportive Interim Housing project went online in May 2021 in Mountain View, CA on a very short 6 month project timeline. Connect Homes provided 88 out of 100 rooms at this location, increasing Mountain View’s ability to house the homeless by 10X, overnight. The city reports that per-door and operation costs for the project are a fraction of alternatives.
Connect Homes is leveraging their extensive prefab expertise to create well designed homes for a highly diverse cross-section of society — whether they are typical clients of residential architecture or those experiencing homelessness.
“We are extremely excited to announce the 2021 San Francisco Design Week Awards,” says SFDW Executive Director Dawn Zidonis. “The quality of the many entries we received was exceptional, exceeding expectations in answering our theme ‘POWER’ with inspiration and innovation. Congratulations to this year’s outstanding and diverse winners.”
San Francisco Design Week (SFDW), is the premier gathering of the world’s most active design community. The theme, “POWER” was met by award winners from leading design firms, in-house teams, and creative individuals, who are honored today.
SFDW Design Awards is an international design competition seeking to encourage thought leadership by supporting designers whose works can contribute towards a positive future for society. The Design Awards celebrates and recognizes exemplary work in all fields of design, including architecture, interior design, industrial design, communication design, and user experience design.
Twenty-five winning projects and seven honorable mentions were selected by a jury comprised of distinguished professionals, who reviewed submissions from an exceptionally competitive pool of applicants from USA and Europe.
About Connect Homes
Connect Homes is a SoCal-based prefab company, founded by architects, that designs, manufactures, transports, and installs modern, green, award-winning single-family homes at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional homebuilding by manufacturing homes on an assembly line. Connect Homes currently has a 2,000 square foot glass-and steel house coming off their assembly line every 6 working days. The assembly-line approach continues into the installation phase, where station teams travel with the house in order to finish specific scopes of work all the way through move-in.
The goal is to give modern architecture fans the house they want, where they want it, at a price they can afford. While the beauty of the design speaks for itself, Connect Homes is also innovating on the process of building homes. From the first meeting, clients have real visibility into what their house will cost to build. This type of project cost clarity insulates clients against the unknowns that very often derail residential architecture on the way from design to construction.
